Pickleball scoring confuses almost every new player. Three numbers? Who serves first? What is this 0-0-2 thing? This guide breaks down pickleball scoring so clearly that you will never be confused on the court again.

The Basics: Games to 11, Win by 2

Standard pickleball games are played to 11 points and you must win by 2 points. So if the score reaches 10-10, play continues until someone leads by 2 (like 12-10 or 13-11).

In some tournaments, games are played to 15 or 21 — but the win-by-2 rule always applies.

Singles Scoring: Two Numbers

In singles, the score has two numbers: the server's score, then the receiver's score.

For example, if you are serving and the score is 4-2:

  • You (the server) have 4 points
  • Your opponent has 2 points
  • You call out "4-2" before serving

Key rule: You can only score points when you are serving. If you win a rally while receiving, you do not get a point — you get the serve.

Doubles Scoring: Three Numbers (The Famous 0-0-2)

In doubles, the score has three numbers: serving team's score, receiving team's score, and which server (1 or 2).

Here is what the three numbers mean:

  1. First number: Serving team's score
  2. Second number: Receiving team's score
  3. Third number: Server number (1 or 2)

Why Does the Game Start at 0-0-2?

The very first serve of a doubles game starts at 0-0-2. This means the first serving team only gets one serve (not two). The "2" indicates the second server, so when they lose the rally, the serve goes to the other team.

This rule exists to reduce the advantage of serving first. After that initial serve, both teams always get two servers before a side-out.

💡Think of it this way: at the start, the serving team is already on their "second server" — so they only get one chance before the other team serves.

How Serving Rotation Works in Doubles

  1. Server 1 serves from the right court (even score) or left court (odd score)
  2. If Server 1's team wins the rally, they score a point and Server 1 switches sides and serves again
  3. If Server 1's team loses the rally, Server 2 takes over (no point scored)
  4. If Server 2's team loses the rally, it is a side-out — the other team gets the serve

The Even/Odd Rule

When your score is even (0, 2, 4...), the player who started the game on the right side should be on the right side. When your score is odd (1, 3, 5...), that player should be on the left.

This is the easiest way to check if you are on the correct side.

Rally Scoring: The New Format

Traditional pickleball uses side-out scoring — only the serving team can score. But rally scoring is gaining traction, especially in professional play.

How to Call the Score

Always call the score before every serve. In doubles, call all three numbers clearly and pause before serving:

  • "4 - 2 - 1" = Our team has 4, their team has 2, I am server 1
  • "7 - 7 - 2" = Tied at 7, I am server 2
  • "0 - 0 - start" or "0 - 0 - 2" = Game start

💡If anyone on the court is unsure of the score, stop and figure it out before serving. It is much easier to correct the score before a rally than after.

Common Scoring Mistakes

  • Wrong server: The most common error. Use the even/odd rule to verify positions
  • Forgetting to call score: The serve does not count if the score is not called. Make it a habit
  • Losing track of server number: If confused, remember: if you served first for your team this turn, you are Server 1
  • Scoring on a receive: In side-out scoring, you cannot score when receiving. You only earn the right to serve

Quick Reference Cheat Sheet

  • Games to 11, win by 2
  • Singles: call 2 numbers (server-receiver)
  • Doubles: call 3 numbers (server team - receiver team - server#)
  • Game starts at 0-0-2 (first team gets only one serve)
  • Only the serving team scores (side-out scoring)
  • Even score = serve from right, Odd score = serve from left
  • Call the score before every serve
