PickleballScorer gives you two ways to score your matches — Simple Mode for quick casual games and Advanced Mode for full match tracking with AI-powered analysis. This guide walks you through both so you can pick the right one for every game.

Which Mode Should You Use?

The short answer: use Simple Mode when you just want to log results fast, and Advanced Mode when you want detailed stats, AI analysis, and video recording.

  • Playing a casual game at the park? Simple Mode
  • League night and want to track your performance? Advanced Mode
  • Quick round robin with friends? Simple Mode
  • Tournament match you want to analyze later? Advanced Mode
  • Logging multiple games back to back? Simple Mode
  • Want AI match analysis and MVP stats? Advanced Mode

Simple Mode (Quick Mode)

Simple Mode is designed for speed. You set up the teams, play your match, and enter the final score when it is done. No buttons to press during the game — just play.

How Simple Mode Works

  1. Set up your match: Choose singles or doubles, add player names, and select your game mode (online, local, or offline)
  2. Play your game: Score the match yourselves on court — no phone needed during play
  3. Enter the final score: Tap the + and - buttons to enter each team's final score (max 21 points)
  4. Save and go: Hit save, and the match is recorded. Your ratings update automatically

What You Get with Simple Mode

  • Match result saved to your profile and match history
  • CPR and GPR ratings updated based on the result
  • Match visible on PickleIndex and GlobalPickleRank
  • Quick session scoring — save one match and immediately start the next with the same teams

What Simple Mode Does NOT Include

  • No point-by-point tracking
  • No individual player statistics
  • No MVP calculation
  • No AI match analysis
  • No video recording
  • No timed game support

💡Simple Mode is perfect when you are playing multiple casual games and want to log results without interrupting the flow. Set up teams once, and keep saving matches back to back.

Advanced Mode (Recommended)

Advanced Mode is the full scoring experience. It tracks every point, every server rotation, and every momentum shift — then uses AI to analyze your match and determine the MVP.

How Advanced Mode Works

  1. Set up your match: Choose singles or doubles, add players, set winning score (11, 15, or 21), and optionally set a time limit
  2. Start the match: The app manages server rotation and court positions for you
  3. Score point by point: Tap the scoring button after each rally to record who won the point. The app handles serving team, score calling, and side switches
  4. Game completes automatically: When a team reaches the winning score (win by 2), the app ends the game and generates your match analysis

What You Get with Advanced Mode

  • Point-by-point tracking: Every rally is recorded with timestamps and server information
  • Automatic server rotation: The app tells you who serves next and from which side — no more arguments about whose serve it is
  • Player position tracking: Tracks player positions throughout the match for doubles
  • AI match analysis: After the game, AI analyzes the match and provides insights on momentum, scoring runs, and performance patterns
  • MVP calculation: AI determines the Most Valuable Player based on individual contribution, not just the winning team
  • Video recording: Record your match with scoring overlay — great for reviewing your play or sharing highlights
  • Comprehensive statistics: Detailed stats for every player including points scored, serving effectiveness, and more
  • Live match sharing: Others can follow your match in real-time
  • Timed game support: Set a time limit for games that need to finish within a window
  • Full match history: Review any past match point by point

💡Advanced Mode is recommended for any match where you want to improve. The AI analysis shows you patterns you would never notice yourself — like which server rotation you score the most on, or where your momentum drops.

Step-by-Step: Setting Up a Match

Both modes share the same setup flow. Here is how to get started:

1. Choose Your Format

Select Singles (1v1) or Doubles (2v2). For doubles, you will add two players per team.

2. Add Players

Search for registered players by name or add new players. If players are on PickleballScorer, their profiles link automatically and ratings update after the match.

3. Select Game Mode

  • Online: Match is tracked in real-time. Others can follow along. Ratings update automatically
  • Local: Match is saved locally and synced when connected
  • Offline: For when you have no internet. Match saves to your device and uploads later

4. Choose Scoring Mode

Select Advanced Scoring (recommended) or Simple Scoring (quick mode) based on what you need for this match.

5. Set Game Rules

Choose your winning score (11, 15, or 21 points). In Advanced Mode, you can also enable timed games with a custom time limit.

6. Start Playing

In Advanced Mode, tap START MATCH and begin scoring point by point. In Simple Mode, tap ADD SCORE and enter the final score after you finish playing.

Understanding the Advanced Scoring Screen

The Advanced scoring screen can look intimidating the first time, but it is designed to be simple once you understand the layout. Here is what every button and element does.

The Court View

The main screen shows a pickleball court with player names positioned where they are on the court. The app automatically tracks which side each player is on and updates positions after every point.

Scoring Buttons: Green and Amber

This is the core of scoring. After every rally, you tap the player who won it:

  • Green buttons (Serving team): Tap the player on the serving team who won the rally. Their team scores +1 point, and that player earns individual point credit. The teammate earns rally points (assisted)
  • Amber buttons (Receiving team): Tap the player on the receiving team who won the rally. No point is scored (this is side-out scoring), but the serve changes sides. That player earns a break point credit, and the teammate earns rally points

💡Always tap the player who hit the winning shot or forced the error — not just any player on the winning side. This is how the app tracks individual performance and calculates the MVP.

What Are Individual Points?

Individual points track which specific player won each rally. In doubles, a team scores together, but the individual point credit goes to the player who made the winning play. This data feeds into:

  • MVP calculation: The player with the highest individual impact is named MVP
  • Player statistics: Your personal scoring rate, independent of your partner
  • Rating accuracy: More granular data means more accurate CPR/GPR calculations

What Are Break Points?

A break point happens when the receiving team wins a rally. In pickleball, only the serving team can score, so winning a rally while receiving does not add to your score — but it takes the serve away from the other team (a "side out"). This is strategically important because:

  • You prevent the serving team from scoring
  • You earn the right to serve (and the chance to score)
  • Break points are tracked separately because they show defensive strength and clutch performance

Rally Points

When one player on a team wins a rally, their teammate earns rally points. This recognizes that doubles is a team effort — your partner's positioning, setup shots, and court coverage contributed to the winning play even if they did not hit the final shot.

Serve Fault Button

The red Serve Fault button at the bottom is used when the server commits a fault (serves into the net, out of bounds, or violates serving rules). Tapping it:

  • Rotates the serve to the next server (in doubles, to the second server) or triggers a side out
  • No points are scored by either team
  • The app handles all serve rotation automatically — you just tap the button

Position Controls (Before First Point)

Before scoring starts, you can adjust positions to match what is actually happening on court:

  • Swap Team Sides: If Team 1 and Team 2 are on opposite sides from what the app shows, tap the swap button in the center to flip them
  • Swap Players Within a Team: If the two doubles players on a team are on opposite sides from what the app shows, tap the swap icon next to that team
  • Change Starting Server: Tap the serve icon to change which team serves first

These controls disappear after the first point is scored, since the app manages all rotations automatically from that point forward.

Undo Button

Made a mistake? The Undo button reverts the last scoring action — the score, server rotation, and player positions all roll back to exactly where they were before. You can undo multiple times if needed.

Video Recording Tab

The Recording tab lets you record your match with a live scoring overlay. The video shows player names, scores, and serving indicators in real-time — perfect for reviewing your game later or sharing highlights.

Action Log (Commentary)

The Action Log tab shows a play-by-play commentary of everything that has happened in the match: points scored, serve faults, side outs, and position changes. This is useful for:

  • Verifying the score is correct
  • Reviewing what happened in a disputed rally
  • Post-match review of the game flow

Live Scoring

When playing in Online mode, your match generates a live scoring link that anyone can follow. Share the link with friends, family, or tournament spectators so they can watch the score update in real-time from anywhere.

After the Match

Regardless of which mode you use, after saving a match:

  • Your CPR (Common Pickle Rank) updates based on the result and over 50 performance factors
  • If it is a tournament match, your GPR (Global Pickle Rank) updates too
  • The match appears in your match history on your profile
  • Your stats are visible on PickleIndex and GlobalPickleRank
  • In Advanced Mode, you get a detailed AI match analysis with MVP selection

Tips for Getting the Most Out of Scoring

  • Use Advanced Mode for important matches: League games, tournament matches, or any game where you want to track your improvement
  • Use Simple Mode for volume: When you are playing 5-6 casual games in a session, Simple Mode lets you log them all without slowing down
  • Record video in Advanced Mode: Even if you do not watch it right away, having match video with scoring overlay is invaluable for improving your game
  • Review your AI analysis: After Advanced Mode matches, take a minute to read the AI insights. You will spot patterns in your play that you miss in the moment
  • Make sure players are registered: When both teams have registered accounts, the match data feeds into the rating system more accurately
